Do a Google search on “cleanse”.  There are almost 15,000,000 results!  There are body cleanses, liver cleanses, colon cleanses, cleansing diets, juice fasts, detox recipes, on and on.  It is a vast subject – and big business.

So, you’ve done some research, maybe bought a packaged cleanse off the Internet or at your local health food store, or gotten a diet book on various types of cleanses, and started off full speed ahead.  You’re a couple of days into the protocol and you feel really, really rotten.  You have headaches, your energy is low, perhaps you’re suffering some diarrhea.  You’re wondering if this cleansing stuff is just so much hype because you’re supposed to feel better than when you started, not worse.  You’re ready to chuck it all and go back to your old ways.

Actually, in all probability the cleanse is working exactly as it should and what you are feeling is probably a Herksheimer’s reaction.  Herksheimer’s reaction is a term that describes the principle that you get worse before you get better when using, for example, an antibiotic or other health solution.  This is due to the releasing of toxins as the body responds to the remedy.  Many people have a lot of bugs and toxins in their system and if you kill them off too quickly, you will get a Herksheimer’s reaction (weakness, nausea, etc.).

The safest solution is to work with your ND or health care professional to ensure you suffer minimal adverse side effects when you start your cleansing regimen.  If you’re going it alone, follow the directions for the cleanse you have chosen to the letter.  If you get a strong Herksheimer’s reaction, you should probably cut down on the dosage or spread the cleanse out over a longer time period.  Of course, if adverse symptoms persist, see your health care professional.

Cleanses do work, but not all cleanses are suitable to all people.  Remember, too, the toxins in your body didn’t accumulate overnight, so don’t expect to feel at the top of your game the day after you start a cleanse.

In February of 1976 a 19 year old recuit at Fort Dix, NJ fell ill and died.  Two weeks later it was reported he died of H1N1 swine flu.  Even though this flu strain wasn’t seen after March, the government decided to try and vaccinate every American against it.  By October immunizations began and almost immediately 3 senior citizens in Pennsylvania died after taking the shot.  All in all, the government vaccincated about 33% of the population and approximately 25 people died as a result of those vaccinations.  Many thousands of others were sickened.  I was one of those.

In 1976 I was a Navy flight instructor in Helicopter Training Squadron 18 (HT-18) in Florida. In the fall or early winter we were ordered to take the swine flu vaccine.  By this time there had been enough of an uproar about the vaccination and its ill effects that none of us wanted to take the shot.  We petitioned our commanding officer to not make us do it.  He was a good Naval officer and a good man.  He understood our concerns, but there was nothing he could do about it.  He too was taking orders from above.

On the appointed day we were all vaccinated.  The next day I was so sick I couldn’t get out of bed.  I was sick enough to miss work for 3 days and after I was able to go back to work I wasn’t performing at 100% for 3 or 4 weeks.

There were 100 officers in HT-18.  Of the 100 officers, 97 missed from 3 days to 2 weeks of work immediately after getting the swine flu vaccine. I don’t remember how many enlisted personnel there were but I would guess about 200 and I don’t remember how many of them fell ill because of the shot, but I think it was about the same percentage.  A high percentage of the flight students also became ill.

Overnight an entire Navy squadron was rendered completely ineffective.  An enemy could not have done a better job of incapacitating our squadron than our own government had.  How many other military units were similarly affected?

Basically, as in 1976, the government is just going to throw this vaccine out there. It’s trial-and-error on the American public.  Why?  Is there some clear and present danger?  How many people have died worldwide of swine flu?  Somewhere around 500.  Did you know that 36,000 people die of enfluenza in the United States EVERY YEAR?  So why the panic over the swine flu?

Maybe the swine flu will turn into a full blown problem by this winter – and maybe it won’t.  In either case, I’m not going to line up to get jabbed with some unproven, untested, and possibly unsafe drug.  Maybe you shouldn’t either.

I don’t know a person who doesn’t take some form of over the counter or prescription medication from time to time. We all get sick eventually so we will go to the local drug store and pick up some medication to help us get over the flu, chronic cough, sneezing, and digestive problems. What this is bill is suggesting is to outlaw 60% of natural health products currently sold in Canada, even while criminalizing parents who give herbs or supplements to their children.

This may include blueberries and dandelion greens. Even drying natural herbs in your kitchen could be considered a criminal offense.

From the research I have done, this is being backed up by Big Pharma. Some say that natural and holistic use for treating illness is getting so popular, that some of the pharmaceutical corporations are pushing the government to step in, thus this bill.

In my research into this condition I’ve learned that there is no cure – “Take this magic pill and your eczema will disappear forever.” Not gonna happen, at least not right now. Traditional medical wisdom preaches taking corticosteroids in the form of creams and pills to moderate the itching. Do you know how steroids moderate the itching caused by eczema? They suppress your immune system, making it easier for you to get an infection or worsening an infection you already have. If you’re using steroids you should avoid contact with anyone who may be sick and you better not get a fungal infection, because your immune system may not be able to adequately fight it. Since there is no cure for eczema, you could be looking at being on and off corticosteroids for the rest of your life. Doesn’t work for me!

That said, if you follow the plan she outlines, you could experience a “permanent remission” in your eczema, and I think that’s the ultimate goal. Consider “Beat Eczema” a blueprint or a roadmap to success, empowering you to take control of your fate rather than leave it in the hands of doctors, and beat your eczema. I found the book positive and informative.

At $29.99, “Beat Eczema” is fairly priced and I would have bought the book even if there were no bonuses, but the value of the bonuses far outweighs the relatively modest price of the ebook. They are downright awesome! There’s a 14 page guide on natural beauty tips, a guide on supplements to help you combat eczema, an 18 page interview on the healing power of water, a 177 page guide to optimum health, and a 265 page(!) book on nature cures.

If you suffer from eczema, are looking for solutions other than those offered by traditional medicine, and want to expand you knowledge of natural health in the bargain, I don’t think you can go wrong with “Beat Eczema”. I highly recommend it.

An October 2006 American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) press release confirmed that xylitol can be highly dangerous for dogs. A clinical report appearing in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) discusses the sometimes fatal conditions developed by dogs that have ingested xylitol.

“Not all things that are natural are safe,” said veterinary toxicologist Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, who along with veterinarian Eric K. Dunayer co-authored the report. “There are plenty of things in the environment that are toxic to pets.” She goes on to say, “The potential for severe illness is very high. People don’t think sugar-free gum can kill their dog. I didn’t before I got into this. But this is something people should be aware of.”

More and more products these days are manufactured with xylitol instead of sugar, including candies, cookies, chewing gum, and toothpaste. A lot of dogs will eat anything they can get a hold of and many dogs seem to have sweet tooth, so it is very important to keep any product containing xylitol out of reach of your dog.

If you suspect that your dog has eaten something containing xylitol, contact your veterinarian immediately. The effects are so rapid that the window of opportunity to treat the dog is very small.

The ASPCA warns that within 30 minutes of consuming a small amount of a xylitol-sweetened product, dogs can experience a dramatic drop in blood sugar, and they usually begin vomiting, become lethargic and can have difficulty standing or walking. Some have seizures, develop internal hemorrhaging and lesions and suffer liver failure. As few as two or three sticks of xylitol gum could be toxic to a 20-pound dog. Immediate and aggressive veterinary treatment, which includes glucose drips and IV fluids, has proved effective in many cases.

There are no known issues with xylitol and cats, but cats typically don’t sniff out sweets like dogs do. A good rule for any pet owner, whether or not you own a dog, is to keep xylitol away from your pets.

Well…….maybe not so lucky. In this example, you had high blood pressure but it wasn’t too high, so the doc prescribed a diuretic. You start peeing up a storm and start feeling run down at the same time. No wonder; you’re excreting a ton of potassium in your urine and you feel like a slug. The potassium supplement helps, but you’re still urinating all the time, so you’re given a drug for overactive bladder, which has a side effect of causing mild constipation.

Far fetched? Maybe, maybe not. How much time do you spend with your doctor at any given appointment? Fifteen – twenty minutes? Is that enough time to get at the root cause of your problem? As often as not the doctor will write a prescription to treat the symptom rather than take the time to look for the cause, and as often as not you go along with it because, “the doctor knows best.”

Drugs are targeted to treat a symptom, but they are not laser-guided in their approach; they affect the body systemically. A statin may lower bad cholesterol, but it also lowers ALL cholesterol, good and bad by compromising the liver’s ability to produce all cholesterol. And drugs often have a whole host of side effects totally unrelated to the symptom being treated. Does it sound reasonable to have impaired sex drive as a side effect to a cholesterol-lowering drug? Doesn’t to me!

In clinical trials pharmaceutical companies only want to prove one thing with a new drug and if it does that thing, they push the FDA to approve it and then rush it to market. Side effects are played down, ignored, or swept under the carpet. How long did it take for the fatal side effects of Vioxx to come to light? In my humble opinion, the pharmaceutical companies only care about their bottom line. They don’t care about the side effects of their drugs and they don’t care about you except as a consumer of their product, and they want you to be a consumer continuously, for the rest of your life, however short it may be. If they cared, over 100,000 people a year would NOT die from properly prescribed and administered pharmaceuticals!

Back to our blood pressure example, if your blood pressure is a little high, why not work with a naturopath to make changes in your diet and life style? Losing a little weight, drinking one less cup of coffee a day or one less glass of wine in the evening can bring your blood pressure down. Get some exercise, meditate, reduce your smoking. You don’t have to make radical changes to have positive effects. Try natural supplements like COQ10, hawthorn, fish oil, and folic acid. You don’t have to get caught in the downward spiral of more and more drugs. As I said in a previous post, it’s your life.
